Los crucigramas son juegos de palabras, tradicionalmente escritos e incluidos también en el universo de los pasatiempos por estrito. Consisten en una cuadrícula donde se colocan una serie de palabras en orden horizontal y vertical, cruzadas entre sí. De tal forma que cada cuadro de la cuadrícula alberga una letra (aunque hay variaciones en las que se introducen sílabas: crucigramas silábicos), y cada letra forma parte de dos palabras con diferente orientación (horizontal y vertical).

Inicialmente el crucigrama se presenta vacío. El objetivo del juego es precisamente encontrar las palabras que completan la cuadrícula del crucigrama. Y para ello se facilitan dos listas de definiciones númeradas por filas y columnas y agrupadas según la orientación.
